“She walked into the post office where I worked to wish me a happy new year, and I gave her some money and told her to have fun and have fun.

– This is the last time I saw her. It was her last New Year, “she added.

Polish couple Ms Maziakowska and her husband Lukasz Kolek, 40, had spent Christmas at home with Olivia, who helped decorate the tree and bake festive cookies.

“I took a picture of her while she was cooking them. I will cherish them now, ”Ms. Maziakowska said.

She also said that Olivia was going to a house party with friends and was not sure whether she pressed the light at the crosswalk before crossing the road.

“I think she was talking on the phone with a friend because a friend of her later said he heard a big bang and someone needed to call an ambulance.”

Sergeant Julie Lyman of the West Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This is a really horrible way to start the New Year and my thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends.

“We opened an investigation to find out what happened and the driver was arrested because we believe he was driving when he was unfit because of the drugs.

“The investigation is clearly in its early stages and I urge people not to speculate online as to what happened. It is really not helpful and can be very upsetting for the family.

Anyone who saw what happened or saw the gray Mercedes driving during the preparation for the accident is urged to make contact.

The force says to send messages to agents on the live chat via its website or email the severe collision investigation unit directly to [email protected]
