The best movies to watch this fall 2021, from Dune to Spencer

Reserve your tickets, buy your popcorn – we’re in the best blockbuster movie set since before the pandemic. Nothing beats the big screen, so here’s our guide to movie essentials this fall.

Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson in Dune

/ PA

Timothée Chalamet and Denis Villeneuve harness all the best of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic to create a feverish and poetic blockbuster that even those who classify Herbert as “nice but indecipherable” will appreciate. This movie only covers the first half of the book, so as the whole world prepares for the moon over Dune, this is just the beginning. COS

Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana

The brilliant, daring, often knowingly camp of Pablo Larrain, offering three-day leads in the life of Diana, Princess of Wales (Kristen Stewart; prodigious). We are at Sandringham House in the early ’90s and all of the Royal Family, including its Major, are determined to reduce Di. This feast will gag the royalists. Queens and commoners? They’ll lap him up. COS

The French dispatch

Timothée Chalamet in La Dépêche française

/ Projector photos

Wes Anderson returns with another aesthetic ensemble drama set at the French office of a New York-style magazine in the fictional town of Ennui-sur-Blasé. Regular Anderson collaborators like Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Owen Wilson are there, as well as Timothée Chalamet and Léa Seydoux. KR

Dear Evan Hansen

Ben Platt in Dear Evan Hansen

/ PA

It’s based on a hit musical that no one in their right mind would call feelgood. One of the most important characters kills himself, and for most of the movie our high school hero Evan (Broadway champion Ben Platt) swings between guilt and mania. But will it make us FEEL? With Julianne Moore and Amy Adams in the cast, the answer has to be yes. COS

The Many Saints of Newark

The cast of Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark

/ Barry wetcher

The trailers for this prequel to The Sopranos have thrown fans into a happy tizz. James Gandolfini’s real son Michael looks perfect as teenage Tony, though Sopranos writer David Chase insists the focus is on Tony’s sexy uncle, Dickie (Alessandro Nivola). If The Many Saints of Newark turns out to be Scorsese-by-numbers, it’ll be a slap in the face. Right now, Chase is god. COS

The last duel

Jodie Comer in The Last Duel

/ PA

According to Jodie Comer, Ridley Scott’s medieval epic (based on a true story) will offer multiple perspectives on a rape. Let’s ignore Matt Damon & Ben Affleck’s shady haircuts (they look 14th century like Siegfried & Roy). Comer and Adam Driver, who plays the rapist, are two of the best actors on the planet. COS

Gucci House

Adam Driver and Lady Gaga in House of Gucci

/ PA

Ridley Scott again. This time, the real crime is about a charismatic fortune hunter, Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), who, after marrying the Gucci clan, becomes a bit murderous when her ex-husband Maurizio (Adam Driver) remarries. The clothes and prostheses are undoubtedly of superior quality. It promises to be a lot of fun. COS

The respect

Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin

Before her death, Aretha Franklin chose Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson to play her in a future biopic. The Soul Queen has made an inspired casting choice: Hudson lights up the screen with her standout performance in Respect, the feature debut by acclaimed Broadway director Liesl Tommy. She is joined by Forest Whitaker, Audra McDonald and Marlon Wayans. KR

No time to die

Daniel Craig in No Time to Die

/ Pennsylvania

The release date for Daniel Craig’s last outing as Bond has been rocked and churned a few times thanks to you know what, but it should finally hit the big screen at the end of the month. We find our hero trying to relax in Jamaica, after leaving active service – until his CIA friend Felix Leiter appears, needing help saving a kidnapped scientist. Does this guy already have a day off? Who knows, but his return will be a major test for the return of cinema. JT

Mothers Day

Stunning, star-studded period drama just in time for fall? You spoil us. Josh O’Connor, Odessa Young, Olivia Colman and Colin Firth star in this adaptation of Graham Swift’s novel about a secret love story between upstairs and upstairs. Full of searing nostalgia, it could be the Atonement of this decade. JT

Venom: let there be carnage

Despite a brutal critical panning for Venom’s first big screen release in 2018, Eddie Brock is back. Tom Hardy returns as an investigative reporter who has an alien symbiote (whatever it is) living in his body. Andy Serkis takes the reins of directing, with Naomie Harris, Woody Harrelson and the tireless Stephen Graham joining the cast. JT

Jamie Dornan and Ciaran Hinds in Belfast

Kenneth Branagh’s latest directorial effort couldn’t be further from his recent series of Agatha Christie adaptations. Based on his childhood in Northern Ireland at the height of the Troubles, this is a much more personal and uncluttered project. Shot in black and white, it stars Jamie Dornan, Judi Dench and Caitriona Balfe, with 10-year-old newcomer Jude Hill in the central role. KR

Last night in Soho

Anya Taylor-Joy in Last Night in Soho

Ready to get lost in London? Edgar Wright’s latest is a psychological thriller in which Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), a fragile, modern fashion student, is catapulted into the swinging sixties, where she merges with the seemingly carefree Sandie (Anya Taylor- Joy). The film explores bright lights and red lights – that is, camouflaged exploitation – with the late Lady Diana Rigg especially divine as the owner of Fitzrovia who has seen it all. COS

The phantom of the open

Mark Rylance in The Phantom of the Open

Manna from heaven: the simple words “from the writer of Paddington 2”. This movie was practically perfect, so we can’t wait to see this new comedy based on the life of supposedly worst golfer in the world Maurice Flitcroft, written by Simon Farnaby. The cast also features the Best of Brits: Mark Rylance plays Flitcroft and Sally Hawkins and Rhys Ifans are also starring. JT

king richard

Will Smith in King Richard

Richard Williams was Compton’s grandpa who conquered the privileged and racist world of tennis through his daughters Venus and Serena. It’s hosted here by Will Smith (already shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Actor) and while Smith’s performance accentuates the positive, the word in advance suggests that director Reinaldo Marcus Green isn’t glossing over the more. complicated about his character. COS

Ron went wrong

An animated film for children, by the young British company, Locksmith. A young boy covets a must-have toy, but the “B-bot” he gifted turns out to be one of a kind. “Ron,” much like Free Guy’s entertaining “Dude”, is a slippery work in progress. Expect the voice actors (including Zach Galifianakis, Olivia Colman) to know exactly what they’re doing. COS

Green knight

Dev Patel in Green Knight

/ PA

Director David Lowery’s trippy take on the Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain (the 14th century poem that will be very familiar to generations of English literature students) stars Dev Patel in the title role, proving even more that he’s one of our most versatile stars. . It received rave reviews on its American debut earlier this year and will finally be released in the UK in September. Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton and Barry Keoghan are also on the bill. KR

The final trailer for this Disney / Marvel excursion is fabulously funny and moving. Phew! We weren’t sure the superheroes, and Nomad’s Chloe Zhao, would fit well. Looks like we were wrong. A race of quiet and powerful immortals, including Brian Tyree Henry as the first character to be portrayed as gay in a Marvel movie, begin to rethink their relationship to humanity. Eternals seems built to last. COS

Ghostbusters: the afterlife

Paul Rudd in Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Who are you going to call? Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard and rising star McKenna Grace (who has appeared in everything from Me, Tonya to The Handmaid’s Tale) are directing this reboot, which takes place thirty years after the events of Ghostbusters 2. They play two young people who move in. in the house of their late grandfather. – and learn about his connections to the original Ghostbusters gang. Look for cameos by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver. KR
