Sidney is often joined by Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox). They help solve the mystery of who wears the Ghostface mask. Written as a meta take on the horror genre as a whole, the franchise doesn’t pull its punches when it comes to well-written, clever characters.

ten Joel Jones escaped from the main plot

Duane Martin as Joel Jones

Joel Jones was a secondary character in the first sequel, Cry 2. Coming to replace the late Kenny as the local Gale Weather cameraman, Joel originally had a short-lived career filming bingo nights at the local community center. By becoming Gale’s cameraman, he found himself in the crosshairs of the college killer.

After Randy died in his van, Joel established himself as one of the smartest characters in Scream and in horror films as a whole. He left the situation, only returning once the killers were confirmed dead.

9 Roman Bridgers canonically kicks off the franchise

Scott Foley as Roman Bridge

Despite feelings about Cry 3 and Roman as the Ghostface killer, there’s no denying he’s one of the smartest characters. The son of a Hollywood executive and Maureen Prescott, he quickly found himself in a position of power. He even got a few directing jobs along the way.

Where his intelligence shines is through his storylines. In the barrel of Cry 3, Roman notes that he was directly involved in transforming Billy Loomis into the killer he became. He also managed to bring Sidney to Hollywood and trick Gale into thinking he was dead, which he methodically planned.

8 Richie Kirsch lied between his teeth for months

Jack Quaid as Richie

The latest in a long line of Ghostface killers, Richie is the newest, making an appearance in Cry 5 (2022). Richie first appeared as a nice boyfriend to the franchise’s latest new girl, Sam Carpenter. All along Cry 5it references the rules of horror and even fights against many of the choices made by the rest of the cast.

This turns out to be a well thought out ruse. Richie is a super fan of the Stab franchise, the film within the film of events. He wanted a ‘requel’ worthy of the originals. He uses a lot of trickery and cunning to succeed.

seven Dewey Riley may be the heart but he still has a brain

David Arquette as Dewey Riley

Often noted as the heart of the main three (Sidney, Gale and Dewey), Dewey has always had one foot in thought and the other in action. Through the 5 Screams, Dewey went from deputy bodyguard to sheriff. He maintains a physical presence in all the films.

Even though he’s more of a defender type, he has several key moments to outsmart even Gale or stumble on a proper fix. Unfortunately, his murderous antics also led to him being stabbed a total of 11 times.

6 Jill Roberts used her cunning to set herself up as a victim

Emma Roberts plays Jill Roberts in Scream 4

Sidney Prescott’s cousin and main face of Cry 4, Jill Roberts plays the victim card all the way as she tries to claim forever girlhood status. She spends the movie making choices that seem counterintuitive, only to pull the wool under Sidney. This plot twist saw Jill take the reins of Ghostface.

Viewers watch as the young heroine-turned-villain charts her inner villain in a monologue in Sidney. It’s fascinating how thoughtful the attacks have been. From her primary goals to her betrayals, Jill proves she’s terrifyingly smart as a character.

5 Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin are both inspired by their uncle’s best feature

Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin

It might be cheating to lump these two together, but they’re on par as smart twins. Randy Meeks’ niece and nephew twin team Mindy and Chad are fan-favorite new additions to the cast of Cry 5 (2022).

Mindy stands out from the start of Cry 5 as a voice of reason and exposing “requel” facts, much like his uncle. Chad proves to be as smart as his sister in action. These characters play successful homages to the original while retaining their own solid character and intelligence.

4 Randy Meeks Proves To Be One Of The Smartest Horror Characters

Jaime Kennedy as Randy Meeks

Randy Meeks has often proven that he’s still one of the smartest characters in the franchise, even posthumously proving his intelligence. In all three of his franchise appearances, Randy proves to be a threat to Ghostface killers, even becoming a target on several occasions.

Although he dies in Cry 2his legacy and character archetype are seen and referenced in every Scream. Randy has also become an archetype for smart horror characters, being someone who acts smart in a horror series.

3 Billy Loomis was the first and best Ghostface

Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis

When people say you can’t top the original, they might be talking about Billy Loomis. Even though he was set up by Roman to start killing, Billy came up with the blueprints that define the franchise as it exists today. His knowledge of the world and horror movies, which rivals Randy’s, is impressive.

He acts with a purpose. He forces those around him, including Stu and Sidney, to bend to his will. Even in ghost or hallucination form, Billy retains his intelligence to control and manipulate those around him.

2 Gale Weathers has the intelligence of an educated woman with heart

Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers

With several books and a distinguished career as a journalist under his belt, Gale has experienced the greatest transformation in terms of intelligence during his career. Scream. Not only does she exemplify the intelligence in the book as she regularly helps solve murders, but she also gains emotional intelligence.

Unfortunately, Gale isn’t the smartest character and makes some particularly stupid decisions in the entire franchise. For example, she returns to Woodsboro in Cry 5 because she can’t refuse a story and an emotional confrontation.

1 Sidney Prescott survives 5 movies with pure intelligence

Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott in Scream 2022

As if there had never been the slightest doubt, from his first moments on screen, Sidney Prescott constantly makes the right decisions to save himself and those around him. She refuses to trust Billy after she suspects him of being the killer. She keeps moving from place to place to stay intact. Through Cry 4she doesn’t even carry a phone to protect herself.

She doesn’t show up in places without having a good reason, as seen in the last 3 films. When she shows up, she doesn’t mock any of the killers, outmaneuvering them at every turn.
