Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie will release her very first solo compilation, SongbirdJune 24.
The package, recently remastered by acclaimed producer Glyn Johns, contains material from two of his solo albums (1984’s Christine McVie and 2004 Waiting), plus two previously unreleased tracks and a new orchestral rendition of it Rumors ballad “The singing bird”.
The keyboardist recorded the previously unreleased “All You Gotta Do”, a duet with George Hawkins, while recording Waiting; John finished the track by adding parts from Ricky Peterson (Hammond organ) and Ethan Johns (drums, guitar).
“Slowdown,” available below, was originally written for the 1985 film American flyers. “I was asked to write a song for a film about a cycling competition,” McVie said in a statement. “So I thought we’d give it a try. That’s why the lyrics are sort of muddled with a bit of a love song, a bit of cycling. And it went really well, but they don’t. didn’t. We thought it was a shame to waste it, so here it is.
The orchestral version of “Songbird” combines McVie’s original vocals with a new string arrangement by composer-arranger Vince Mendoza.
While the 10-track set primarily focuses on Waiting, two of the most notable tracks are taken from the eponymous disc: “Ask Anybody”, co-written with Steve Winwood, features the Traffic frontman on piano and backing vocals; meanwhile, “The Challenge” features cameos from Eric Clapton (lead guitar) and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac (backing vocals).
