Dolphins claim third straight victory, top Jets 24-17

Tua Tagovailoa threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Myles Gaskin early in the fourth quarter and the Miami Dolphins hung on to beat the New York Jets 24-17 on Sunday for their third straight victory.

A week after an impressive win over Baltimore, the Dolphins (4-7) overcame a few penalties – and the Jets themselves played sloppy – to secure their first three-game winning streak since winning five. in a row in the middle of last season.

With the game tied at 14, Tagovailoa faced a lot of pressure when he fought off Gaskin, who retained the ball to give the Dolphins the lead 21-14 with 10:15 to go despite strokes from CJ Mosley and Isaiah Dunn in the end zone. Mosley received a helmet-to-helmet hit from Dunn on the game and left to be checked for a head injury.

Practice was aided by a brutal passer penalty on John Franklin-Myers in third place on 6, when Tagovailoa’s pass to Gaskin fell incomplete.

A penalty hurt the Jets (2-8) again on Miami’s next possession, when Tagovailoa was sacked on the third down – but he was shattered by a restraining appeal on Jason Pinnock. The Dolphins clocked up and took a 24-14 lead with 1:57 left over Jason Sanders’ 24-yard field goal.

Matt Ammendola, who missed two field goals, had 35 yards in the dying seconds to cap the score.

Tagovailoa finished 23 of 33 for 273 yards and touchdowns to Gaskin and Mack Hollins with an interception. Receiver Jaylen Waddle netted a 1-yard TD for Miami, who took the series seed for the first time since 2000 taking a 56-55-1 lead in the duel.

The Jets, who rebounded defensively after allowing at least 45 points in three of their last four games, couldn’t make any late key saves. And they couldn’t do anything consistently on offense.

Joe Flacco made his first start in place of injured Zach Wilson who missed his fourth game in a row. New York chose to go with Flacco, 36, rather than Mike White, saying the veteran would give them a better chance against Miami’s aggressive defense.

Flacco was 24 of 39 for 291 yards and touchdowns to Elijah Moore and Jamison Crowder. Moore finished with eight catches for a career-best 141 yards.

What time is it?

Ammendola lined up for a 56-yard shot on the Jets’ first possession after halftime, but New York was called in to delay the game. Coach Robert Saleh chose to take the penalty, possibly trying to get Miami out of the game. New York then kicked.

Tagovailoa threw a deep pass down the left sideline to a wide open and waiting Hollins. The Dolphins wide receiver stepped onto the field and ran into the end zone to give the Dolphins a 14-7 lead with 9:06 left in the third quarter.

Ammendola was on the sidelines for 40 yards, but the Jets sent the Dolphins on a three-and-out – and got help from Miami on an interference call on the punt.

In the third and -8, Flacco passed through the middle of Moore, who caught the ball past a diving Byron Jones and took off for a 62-yard TD to tie him to 14 at the end of the third quarter.

Quick Start

The Dolphins roamed the field against the Jets’ struggling defense, scoring 83 yards in 11 games to take a 7-0 lead over Waddle’s 1-yard run following a transfer from Gaskin to the Wildcat.

Tagovailoa was selected by Ashtyn Davis for Miami’s next possession, Michael Carter ran for 39 yards on the first down to give New York the first and the goal in 1. Three games later, the Jets had it. made on fourth down – and Flacco found Crowder in the end zone to equalize for New York.

Double doinks

The Jets were fortunate enough to take the lead just before halftime, but Ammendola hit the left upright on a 55-yard yardstick.

This gave the Dolphins the ball in their 45th with just over a minute to go. But after reaching the Jets 14, Sanders snapped a 32 yards from the top of the right upright as time ran out to keep the game tied at 7.
