Australia v England second test, third day – live!

Hello Australians. Good (very early) morning the British. We are back at Adelaide Oval for this third day of the second Test. Well, Lightning was the England player on Day 2 as the elements halted proceedings before the tourists’ already dented sleeves took further blows. A divine intervention, if you will, at 17 for two and 456 descents. Now they are resuming, on a mission from God, to save this Test and the series.

The stalemate between Cricket Australia and the South Australian health authorities is frankly heavier than what is happening on the ground. And as Pat Cummins watches from isolation in NSW, his team are taking their confidence from bat to ball. The circumstances in England are effectively the reverse of this. The scoreboard moves forward, Mitchell Starc already has his tail high, Michael Neser has his first test wicket and Jhye Richardson looks sharp. This is even before arriving at Nathan Lyon, who really likes the pink ball.

Word is, it’s a bit cooler (albeit still relatively humid) at Adelaide Oval today, which will suit Australian bowlers. This little fact could have bounced around this very particular tactical brain belonging to Steve Smith yesterday. As the mercury hovered in the mid-1930s, the captain made his hosts squat with the bat and forced England to continue working hard on the pitch until sunset, when he told 473 for nine.

That score also had a bit to do with England’s one-note attack and some general neglect. It’s hard to see tourists pass this test, but Ben Stokes still believes in it, so let’s see what happens. Over to you, Joe Root and Dawid Malan. In Gabba, this pair has set up a partnership of 159 points. Can they do it again?
