Mikel Arteta has hailed Rob Holding for his pivotal role in Arsenal’s crucial and hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wolves last night.

Holding was on hand to fend off a host of attacks from the home side during the second half and after the game his manager gave him special praise.

“His attitude, his commitment to the team, whether he plays every week or plays a minute, it’s unbelievably good. It is a very good influence for the rest.

“Today he really helped the team, the way he defended the box made a huge difference. Thanks to him, we won the game.

Gabriel Magalhaes scored the game’s only goal in the first half after tapping home Alexandre Lacazette’s neat shot inside the penalty area.

However, their hard work may have been undone after striker Martinelli was sacked.

Michael Oliver showed his red card after the player blocked a throw-in and then fouled Ruben Semedo, the sending-off leaving Arsenal fans furious.

But Holding stepped into the breach, and Martin Keown believes the decision to bring in the former Bolton man to watch the showdown was “smart”.

“It was a smart move to bring in Rob Holding,” club legend Keown told BT Sport.

“Every time he came he performed really well and they saw it all the way. This is the important thing.
